Norra AM Enables Industrial ESD Components

ESD-safe industrial enclosure with electronics produced using additive manufacturing

Electrostatic discharge (ESD) protection is a critical requirement in industries where sensitive electronics are handled, assembled and tested. In factories, assembly lines and automated production environments, components need to do more than simply fit the design — they must perform reliably in daily operation.

At Norra AM, we manufacture production-ready ESD parts for real industrial applications. Our capability goes beyond prototypes and small demonstration parts. We produce functional ESD components for applications such as production fixtures, assembly tools, machine components and protective enclosures.

Norra AM is the only company in Sweden offering this specialized capability for industrial ESD end-use parts, and one of only a few companies in Europe able to manufacture larger functional ESD components using advanced additive manufacturing.

ESD parts built for production

Additive manufacturing has evolved significantly. While 3D printing has traditionally been associated with prototypes, modern industrial technologies now enable companies to produce functional components that are used directly in production.

Using Multi Jet Fusion (MJF) technology, Norra AM helps companies manufacture customized ESD parts with shorter lead times, reduced supply chain complexity and greater design freedom compared to traditional manufacturing methods.

This opens new possibilities for companies that need specialized components without the cost and limitations of conventional tooling.

Large and functional ESD components

Many ESD printing solutions are focused on small components and development applications. Norra AM specializes in larger and more robust parts designed for industrial environments.

This includes components used in electronics manufacturing, factory automation and production systems where both mechanical functionality and ESD performance are required.

The ability to manufacture larger components is a key advantage. Parts can be designed around the actual application instead of being limited by traditional manufacturing constraints.

Reliable ESD performance for sensitive electronics

The ESD printing process creates parts with static dissipative properties designed for environments where controlled electrostatic discharge is essential.

The process produces parts within the static dissipative range, with a specified surface resistance of 10⁴–10¹¹ Ω. This makes the technology suitable for applications where sensitive electronics need protection during assembly, testing and handling.

By combining ESD capability with industrial-grade additive manufacturing, Norra AM enables companies to create functional components that meet the demands of modern production environments.

Design guidelines for ESD parts

Part design is important for both ESD and mechanical performance. The process is particularly suited to larger, bulky geometries, with a recommended minimum wall thickness above 3 to 4 mm.

For mechanically critical features, orientation should also be considered carefully, as Z-oriented features may have lower mechanical performance. The environment where the component is used should also maintain a minimum relative humidity of 30%.

These factors are considered when evaluating and preparing components for ESD production

Enhance properties with vapor smoothing

Vapor smoothing is available as a premium post-processing option and can further support the ESD performance of the finished component.

According to the ESD process recommendations, vapor smoothing provides greater flexibility in meeting the primary ESD requirements. This makes it a valuable option for applications where reliable ESD properties are particularly important.

At the same time, vapor smoothing improves surface quality and provides a more refined appearance, adding an additional benefit for functional end-use parts such as enclosures, fixtures and production components.

A shorter supply chain through local production

Traditional manufacturing of specialized industrial components often involves long lead times, tooling investments and limited flexibility.

Additive manufacturing provides a more agile alternative. By producing parts locally and digitally, companies can reduce supply chain complexity and respond faster to changing production needs.

From replacement components to customized production tools, Norra AM helps manufacturers move from idea to finished part with fewer steps and greater flexibility.
